Spousal Support, sometimes referred to as Alimony, is a tool used by Attorneys to try and make a property settlement fair where there is a substantial disparity in income between the spouses. It is used mainly in long-term marriages as a way to support and maintenance of a former spouse who is unable to support themselves. It is not used in all divorces, and Spousal Support is handled based on a case by case scenario. There is no mandated formula for spousal support, and Judges are given great latitude to try and decide what they think is fair.
